School and BIM
How my architecture studies led me to visual scripting.
I studied Architectural Engineering at the University of Technology in Baghdad. My early projects taught me to work through a building's requirements, from the way people move through it to how it fits into the city. I continued learning after graduation, through housing design and BIM. By 2021, I was rebuilding complex geometry in Dynamo and writing my own Grasshopper scripts. These projects show that progression, from designing buildings to experimenting with the tools that create them.
This was the first complex project I designed during my undergraduate degree. A hotel brought many functions into one building, so I had to work through its requirements and sections together. I learned to plan vertical circulation, emergency exits and service routes as part of the design. The drawings below show how those decisions came together, from the ground floor to the tower.

3 imagesFor my graduation project, I proposed redeveloping Baghdad's financial centre on a site beside the Tigris. My concept connected finance and technology through smart office buildings that technology companies could use. It brought the building and urban design work from the earlier projects together in one district, with a master plan, river elevation and sections through the site.

4 imagesAfter graduation, I continued studying architecture through Global Housing Design, GHD1x on edX from Delft University of Technology. The course looked at housing problems that recur around the world, while recognising that each place needs its own response. My final assignment explored incrementality, a mix of housing types and clustering. The three sheets below take the proposal from its site to the detailed design.

3 imagesIn the BIMA+ programme, I started exploring how geometry could be created and changed through visual scripting. For the Module 3 final project, I rebuilt a complex reference, then edited it and tried different ways of producing the same shape. I wanted to deepen my understanding of geometry creation and optimisation while widening my software skills. The work moved from analysing the reference to generative design results, with the full Dynamo graph showing how I built it.

6 imagesAfter Module 3, I wanted to go further with visual scripting. I knew about Grasshopper but hadn't used it, so I started writing geometric scripts of my own. I was happy with the results. These four examples close the page with the part of my studies that was moving closest to software, creating geometry by defining how it should be built.
